The Reverend Dr. Herman Lee Lewellen, 83, of Jonesboro, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011. Born August 13, 1927 in Forrest City, Arkansas to the late Jesse and Cornelious Malone-Lewellen. Reverend Lewellen was the Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church at 700 Kitchen Street, where he served for 35 years until retiring in 1996. Reverend Lewellen built a legacy of religious leadership and community commitment that was recognized statewide by church officials, civic leaders and service organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred King Lewellen, in 2006. Survivors include five children; five grandchildren; one brother; four sisters and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A visitation service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 700 Kitchen in Jonesboro. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 701 South Main in downtown Jonesboro with Reverend Pierce Moore of El Dorado, Arkansas officiating. Reverend Lewellen will lie in state prior to funeral services on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for public remembrance. Immediately after internment, family, friends and the Jonesboro community will gather in Centennial Hall located inside the Arkansas State University Student Union for the repast.
