Ruth Jane Mixon, 93, of West Memphis, slipped quietly into her final sleep on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. She lived alone in West Memphis before spending the last four days of her life at the Phil & Flo Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. Ms. Mixon was 93 years old and was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey D. Mixon and Flora Alma Barton Mixon. She outlived four younger siblings, Carolyn Whatley, Harvey D. Mixon, Jr., Flora Anne Chandler, and Paul C. Mixon, but remains the beloved "Rufus" to several nieces and nephews. Ms. Mixon is also survived by her dear friend, Inez Dockery of West Memphis. Ms. Mixon lived a good life well, caring for herself and her mother when necessary. Her working life was spent primarily with Anderson Clayton Cotton Company in the Cotton Exchange Building in Memphis. She relished her friendships in the Business and Professional Women organization where she was a long-time member and former state president. She also served as a board member of the Crittenden County Chapter of the AARP. A passion for several years late in life was working with the Battered Women's Shelter in West Memphis. Ms. Mixon is remembered by friends and family as a quite, steady presence in their lives who had all her own teeth when she died. She will be laid to rest in a graveside service at Jonesboro Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 21 with Reverend Emil Williams officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements. Those wishing to make donations should consider the Community Services Center, 911 Magnolia Road, Jonesboro, Ark 72401.
