Murl Smith

Mr. Murl Smith, 88 of Blevins, Ark., passed away, Sunday, April 15, 20112 in Hope. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 30, 1923 in Hot Springs, Ark., to Nuel and Mamie Fulton Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers; Leo, John, Earl and Elmer Smith, his sisters; Opal Honea and Cecil Echols. Mr. Smith enlisted in the US Army on June 16, 1943 and was honorably discharged Nov. 11, 1946. He was a sergeant in the 482nd Anti-aircraft battalion. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received in battles in Germany. He also, received the European Theater ribbon with three battle stars and also received the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. He is retired from the Timex Corporation after 27 years of dedicated employment. After retirement he and wife Mary moved to Blevins to be around family and friends. He was a member of Marlbrook Baptist Church in Blevins and was the caretaker of Macedonia Church and cemetery for 14 years. He loved the outdoors, to go camping with family and friends. His hobbies included cat fishing and bird hunting. Also, known as a "handyman" who loved to tear things up just to see how they worked, then put back together. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Steed Smith of Blevins; three sons, Earl Smith and Brenda of Benton, Stanley Smith and Wendy of Blevins and Lyn Smith and Debbie of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren: Jason Smith, Lyndsey Smith, Desha Karriker and Greg Smith; two great-grandchildren; Hannah and Addison Karriker. The Smith family wishes to thank the staff of Heather Manor and Dr. Dale Goins and staff for the excellent care given. The Smith family will receive friends Tuesday, April 17 between 6 and 8 p.m., at Brazzel/Oakcrest The Funeral Home. Funeral service for Mr. Smith, will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 18 at Marlbrook Baptist Church in Blevins. Rev. Jerry Hill and Rev. Bobby Powers will officiate.
