Eileen Buerkle Pollock, 87, of Little Rock died on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at St. Vincent's Hospice after suffering a head injury from a fall. Eileen was born in Canton, Ohio. Her father, Herman Buerkle (deceased) moved Eileen and her mother, the former Margaret Saunders (deceased) to Baltimore, Maryland during the Depression to find work at the Martin Aircraft Company from which he eventually retired. In World War II Eileen served in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman and cared for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. She attended Hunter College in New York. Eileen worked as a medical secretary in Washington, D.C. before meeting and marrying Clarence Foster Pollock (now deceased).) Both she and Clarence were avid golfers and members of Columbia Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. Eileen won the Washington Post Cup Golf Tournament. She and Clarence moved to Little Rock in 1968 where Clarence started a residential and commercial construction business and joined the Country Club of Little Rock. Having raised her children and tired of cold winters waiting for the golf season to begin, Eileen applied for a temporary job as a secretary for the Arkansas Legislative Session .That temporary job turned into a 16-year career as an administrative assistant with both the Bureau of Legislative Research and the Arkansas Senate. She retired in 1996 but continued to work during Legislative Sessions while waiting for golf weather to begin. Reading, particularly British and Swedish mysteries, and traveling were some of Eileen's many interests. A few of her favorite trips were to Paris, France with her daughter and son-in-law and summer trips to Rosemary Beach, Florida with her sons and their families. She never gave up driving and enjoyed many road trips. She was intellectually curious throughout her life and had a great fondness for cats. She is survived by four children, Linda Crow of Atlanta Georgia and her husband Robert, Jack Crowder of Arlington, Virginia, Terry Pollock and his wife Harriett and Dr. Michael Pollock and his wife Marcia, both of Little Rock, Arkansas, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Marjorie Christian and her husband, Jack, of Potomac, Maryland and three nephews. Friends and family will gather at the home of Dr. Michael Pollock at 2020 Country Club Lane, Little Rock, Arkansas 72207 on Sunday afternoon, February 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. to celebrate Eileen's rich and wonderful life.
