Walter Ray Cantrell

Walter Ray Cantrell, 93, known to his friends as "Chinaman," passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at his home in North Little Rock. He was born October 1, 1918 in Russellville to the late Thomas W. Cantrell and Amanda Philyaw Cantrell Lewis. He was a World War II Army veteran who was stationed on Stirling Island in the Philippines. After he came home, he returned to his job operating a shovel crane and several other big rigs for Minnesota Mining/3M Company formerly Big Rock Stone and Material where he retired after 38 years. During his retirement, he enjoyed repairing lawnmowers, tinkering with anything mechanical and spending time with all his friends that came to visit him. Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, W. Louise Bryant Cantrell; second wife of 55 years, Betty F. Brown Cantrell; sister, Willie Mae Jackson; and brothers, Fred, Leroy and Alvin Cantrell. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Bill Williams, Sue and Harvey Ferrell, Linda K. and Jack Dollar, Sheena and Freddie Hare and Gail and Michael Chance. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren along with many friends. A funeral service celebrating Walter's life will be held 11 a.m., Friday in the North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bobby Don Wickliffe officiating. Interment will be at Edgewood Memorial Park, 4200 Division St., North Little Rock. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170.
