CARL FARLER, 81, of Mabelvale, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2012 at Saline Memorial Hospice in Bryant, after a short battle with brain cancer. He was born March 4, 1931 in Farler, Ky. to Bob and Mary Farler. Along with seven of his 15 siblings, Carl received an education at the Masonic Widows and Orphans Home in Louisville, Ky. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a radio operator on a B36 Bomber until 1954. In 1954, he met Betty Creech in Hamilton, Ohio. Carl proposed on their third date and they were married Christmas Eve in 1954. He earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture at Berea College in Berea, Ky., skipping his master's degree and going on to receive a Ph.D. in Agriculture Economics from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Carl was a Mason and member of the Lions Club. He retired from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Office in 1986, after helping write a Federal Policy. Then he became a full time Professor of Agricultural Economics and head of the Business Department at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Carl was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and hunting deer and turkey with his friends and children. He loved nature and working in his garden. Carl loved current events, talking politics and economy. He considered himself conservative, though most would call him frugal, earning him the nick name "Squeaky." Carl had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and tragically, his daughter, Mary Culpepper on March 4, 2004. Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Farler of the home; daughter, Sandra Farler-Hoyt and husband, Jay of Broken Arrow, Okla.; sons, Thomas Farler of Mabelvale, Ark., Michael Farler and wife, Kathy of Austin, Ark. and Douglas Farler and wife, Kyla of Haskell, Ark.; grandchildren, Amy and Michael Gillespie of Bella Vista, Ark., Audrey and Joshua Fendley of North Little Rock, Kyle Simmons of Simi Valley, Calif., Seth Farler of Little Rock, Anthony Farler of Austin, Ark., Joshua Farler of Cabot, Ark. and Haydn Farler of Hot Springs, Ark.; three great-grandchildren, Evelynn and Owen Gillespie of Bella Vista, Ark. and Emmett Fendley of North Little Rock. Cremation was through Ashby Funeral Home. In accordance with his wishes to "not have a lot of hupla," the family held a private memorial service on June 24 at his home and plan to spread his ashes at his favorite fishing spot this fall. The family would like to thank the staff of Saline Memorial Hospice for their compassionate and loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to Saline Memorial Hospice, 23157 Interstate 30, Bryant, Ark., 72022. Online guest book at www.ashbyfuneralhome.com.
