Hulen Danner Peters

Hulen Danner Anderson Tyree Peters, 90, of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, died March 5, 2012, at her home. She was born December 2, 1921 in Max Meadows, Virginia, the second of seven children. She is preceded in death by her first husband Dorsey W. "DW" Tyree and her beloved husband of 62 years Myron "Pete" Peters. She is survived by a brother and two sisters: Leon Anderson of Fishersville, Virginia; Joe Glenn of Staunton, Virginia; and, Loe Harmon, also of Staunton, Virginia. Other survivors include daughters Kathy McAlister of Little Rock, Arkansas and Melody Taylor of Siloam Springs, Arkansas as well as 6 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. As a war widow, Hulen traveled to Siloam Springs to attend college because she was unable to get into college in Virginia. While riding the bus on the dirt road from Ft. Smith to Siloam, she wondered what she was getting herself into. Once she arrived, she adopted Siloam Springs as her home and grew to love the entire community. Mrs. Peters began a 30 year career teaching business courses at Siloam Springs High School in response to an emergency call for help at the school. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1985. Many of Siloam Springs' business and professional leaders were her students. One of her doctors said that he owed his keyboarding skills to Mrs. Peters. She was the faculty sponsor of the Future Business Leaders of America for many years. She was fond of saying that the C students were often the most successful because they knew how to work hard. After retiring in 1986, she spent innumerable hours for 23 years as a Pink Lady volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a founder of The Manna Center and devoted her energies in easing the plight of the less fortunate. She was also a leader in activities at Siloam Springs United Methodist Church such as United Methodist Women, teaching Sunday School, and serving on various committees. She was a member Delta Kappa Gamma, holding a number of leadership positions. She was a graduate of John Brown University and held a Masters of Education from the University of Arkansas. The joy of her life was her family. She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anyone who walked into her home knew immediately that small children were often present and welcome. Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Siloam Springs in the Wesley Room on Friday, March 9, 2012 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Siloam Springs.
