Mary Elizabeth Hunt Gulley

Mary Elizabeth Hunt Gulley died on Sunday, March 11, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC. She was born in Little Rock on April 23, 1923, and was the daughter of Roy Thomas and Statta Hogg Bragg. Mrs. Gulley was known by her nickname, "Bookie". She graduated from Little Rock Senior High in 1941 and attended Little Rock Junior College for one year before attending the University of Oklahoma from 1942 – 1944, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. When she returned from college, she worked at the Arkansas Democrat until her marriage to John H. Hunt, Jr. in March, 1946. Mr. Hunt was killed in a boating accident in June, 1967. In 1971 she married Wilbur P. Gulley, Jr. who survives her. Mrs. Gulley was a member and past president of the 20th Century Club and a member of the Country Club of Little Rock. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a life member of the Women's Society of Christian Services. She served two terms on the Board of Stewards and was a past member of the United Methodist Church Altar Guild. She also served on the board of the Pulaski County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Little Rock Boys Club, Fine Arts Club, and the Arkansas Art Center. Mrs. Gulley was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Warren E. Bragg, and one grandson, Andrew Hunt Stieferman. She is survived by one son, John Hardy Hunt III, and his wife Cheryl, of Rye, NY; two daughters, Janice Hunt Rounsaville and her husband Gerry of Birmingham, Alabama and Julie Hunt Gaither and her husband, Hugh of Newton, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, John Michael Stieferman, John Robert Gaither and wife Sarah, Joseph Andrew Gaither, Elizabeth Gaither Carter and husband Todd, Catherine Gaither Leitch and husband Chris, John Wilson Hunt, and Spencer Hardy Hunt; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Grace Carter, Caroline Ann Leitch and Elizabeth June Leitch. Additional survivors include her stepsons, Wilbur Paul Gulley, III and his wife Charlotte, their children Paul and Caroline, William Harrison Gulley and his wife, Libby their children Rhyne and Pierce all of Durham, North Carolina, James Ransom Gulley and his children Adrienne and Brynne, and Michael Pierce Gulley all of Little Rock. There will a funeral service Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Little Rock officiated by Reverend Michael Maddox. Entombment will follow services at Rose Lawn Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Little Rock.
