William David Shockley, 63, of Conway, passed from this life on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, following a lengthy illness. David was born on Dec. 19, 1948 in Lake Village, Ark., the first son of C.H. and Margie Shockley. He grew up in Lake Providence, La., where he was an outstanding athlete. After graduating high school, he was offered a football scholarship to attend UCA. He moved to Conway and played tackle for the UCA Bears. While at UCA, he met and married the love of his life, Carol Ann Sanders. They were married 43 years and had one son, Brett, who lives with his wife, Leigh Anne, in Arkadelphia. David was preceded in death by his father, and father-in-law, Alvis "Sandy" Sanders. Besides his wife and beloved son and daughter-in-law, other survivors include his mother, Margie Shockley of Lake Providence, La.; two brothers, Tommy Shockley (Debbie) of Transylvania, La. and Matt (Kriss) Shockley of Humble, Texas; one sister, Tricia White (Robert) of St. Joseph, La.; brother-in-law, Boyed Sanders (Frances) of Conway; mother-in-law, Mildred Sanders of Conway; and a host of nieces and nephews. David retired from the FMC Corporation. In recent years, he was an avid Ouachita Baptist University Tigers fan, while following the career of his coaching son. Though he dealt with years of health challenges, he was cheerful, good-humored, and always anxious to help—loyal and devoted, loved, and missed by many. His faith in Jesus Christ gave him great comfort. David and Brett were not only father and son—they were best friends enjoying their time together hunting, fishing, and sharing sporting events. Family visitation will be Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway. A service celebrating David's life will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m., at the funeral home conducted by Mike Curry of Conway and musicians Ken Wesson and Donna Stowell. Pallbearers will be Brett Shockley, Alex Sanders, Nick Sanders, Matt Shockley, David Williams, and Robert White. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Palmer, Chuck York, Skeet Morse, Tommy Shockley, Greg Church, and Boyed Sanders. Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at the Union Hill Cemetery at Ingalls, Ark. in Bradley County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Light Ministries, PO Box 1238, Conway, Ark. 72033 or to the OBU Gridiron Club, OBU Box 3768, Arkadelphia, Ark. 71998.
