Myrtis Griswood Mitchell, 92, of Plumerville, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012. She was born June 18, 1920 in Dermott, Ark. to the late Claude A. and Naomi (Evans) Griswood. Myrtis was also preceded in death by her husband,W.A. Mitchell, four sisters, Sibyl Goatcher, Mildred Boivin, Ellen Nisler, and Helen Mozingo, a daughter-in-law, Meredith Mitchell, a grandson, Pelham Meeks, and great-grandchild, Kayln Berg. She was a member of Portland Missonary Baptist Church for 52 years and for many years was the songleader for the church. Myrtis attended Springfield School through the eighth grade and later graduated from Morrilton High School. She also attended Ouachita Baptist College. During WWII she lived in Jacksonville, Ark., where she was employed at the Army Ordnance Plant assembling bomb fuses. Myrtis worked at Oberman Manufacturing Company as floor supervisor from 1949 until Oberman was bought out by Levi Straus from which she later retired in 1974 due to her physical disability. She enjoyed watching birds, trout fishing, and painting ceramics. Myrtis also enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans for her family and friends. Myrtis is survived by a son, Richard Lee Mitchell of Mallett Town, Ark., a daughter, Virginia Faulkner and her husband Jim of Shirley, AR, one sister, Mary Dale McCowan of Morrilton, Ark., three grandchildren, Jana Hobbs, John Faulkner, and Meghan Casper, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Portland Missonary Baptist Church, 304 W. Nesbitt Ave., Plumerville, Ark., with Bro. Lindy Davis and Dr. Bill Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the Hill Creek Community. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
