Bettie Lu Gaughan Rogers

Bettie Lu Gaughan Rogers, 95, widow of Curtis Stephens Rogers, died August 2, 2013 in Hot Springs, Ark. She was born February 2, 1918 in Camden, Ark. to parents Bessie Holleman and John Emmett Gaughan. She was a Catholic and always worked in the parish wherever she lived. For over fifty years she was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. The year Mrs. Roger's graduated from high school she won a contest sponsored by Business and Professional Woman's Club and was crowned Ouachita County 1935 Cotton Queen. For two years she attended Saint Mary-of-the Woods College near Terra Houte, Indiana. Then she transferred to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she graduated. While there Bettie Lu belonged to Pi Beta Phi Sorority. On November 15, 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Rogers were married. His job required moving frequently to different states in the USA and Prince Edward Island, Canada. When World War II ended they settled back in Arkansas. While living in Benton and Pine Bluff, Governors Cherry and Faubus appointed Mrs. Rogers to serve on the Board of TB Sanatorium in Alexander, Ark. After her husband died in 1967, Mrs. Rogers began teaching in Elementary schools in Pine Bluff and Camden. She retired after 18 years and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority. She was President of the New Century Club, Secretary of the Ouachita County Historical Society, and a Commissioner on the Housing Authority Board for several years. She always said family and friends came first and travel and reading were second. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Emmett Gaughan and Bessie Holleman and her husband Curtis Stephens Rogers. She is survived by one son, Curtis Stephens Rogers Jr. of Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter, Johanna Harris and husband Vernie of Hot Springs, Ark.; grandson, Shane Harris and wife Wendy of Hot Springs, Ark.; grandson, Curt Harris of Avon, Colo.; grandson, Curtis S. Rogers, III of Zhengzhou, China; granddaughter, Angie Elmore and husband, Larry of Bryant, Ark.; granddaughter, Stephanie Rogers Madrid and husband, Jomil of Boston, Mass.; great-grandsons, Wylyn and Charter Harris of Hot Springs, Ark.; great-granddaughter, Macey Elmore of Bryant, Ark.; brother, Johnny Gaughan of Camden, Ark.; sister, Emily Swift of Birmingham, Ala. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2013 at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father Tony Robbins officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Camden, Ark. Visitation will be Thursday, the morning of the service from 8-11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Hot Springs Hospice or a charity of your choice.
