LINDY VERL BOWIE JR., lost his 21 year fight with cancer Friday evening at home, comforted by family. A man that spit in the eye of adversity for so many years finally settled down for some long overdue peace. Lindy was born Nov. 11, 1951 in Little Rock. The eldest of five children, his core traits of loyalty, grit, and meticulousness were soon evident. As a young man he realized the value of hard work. He was hired by the Coca-Cola Company before graduating from McClellan High School in 1969 and earned his Masters Degree in Engineering from U.A.L.R. in 1974. He departed from the Coca-Cola Company in 2002. As a testimony to his loyalty, Lindy could not help but make a friend feel true shame by even the mention of Coke's competitor. After a brief respite, Lindy was hired by the State of Arkansas as Deputy Director in 2003 and only retired from the state last October when the viciousness of his disease returned with a unreckoned purpose and he began the last leg of his lonesome journey. Lindy is preceded in death by his wife of seven years, Penny Wallace Bowie, with whom he shared his love of travel, a good boat ride across Lake Ouachita and the diagnosis of cancer. He leaves behind his father, Lindy Bowie Sr.; his mother, Lyda; his sister, Sara Wylie (Phillip); his brother, Michael Bowie; his sister, Suzanne Wylie (Tom); his sister Elizabeth Dillard and a slew of others connected through kin and friendship. We have watched with equal measures of disbelief, not so quiet wonder, and, lately, failing hope as our son, our brother, our friend, and our uncle has traveled along his path. Lindy suffered no pity, but he suffered and because of that we are grateful he is now allowed this restorative sleep. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lindy's name to the Myeloma Institute at UAMS, Slot 816, 4301 West Markham Street, Little Rock, Ark. 72205. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, the 6 of Feb. at 11:30 a.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham Street, Little Rock, Ark. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
