Helon Wilma Powell

Helon Wilma Wylie Powell, age 92, passed away Feb. 7, 2013, in Magnolia, Ark. Mrs. Powell was born in Carthage, Ark., to Baron L. and Wilma Wylie on July 10, 1920. She attended Henderson State Teacher's College where she received her teacher's certificate and subsequently taught school in Lewisville, Ark., where she met and married James Boyette Powell, and later worked with her husband at the family business, Southern Lumber & Building Materials. She also served on the Lewisville City Council and Chamber of Commerce for many years. After the death of her beloved husband in 1973, Mrs. Powell worked at Lois Gean's in Magnolia. She enjoyed regular social gatherings with her lifelong friends, affectionately known as "The Lewisville Ladies". Mrs. Powell had an extremely close relationship with her youngest child and best friend, Trish, who visited and lovingly cared for her daily at Dudneywood Assisted Living Center in Magnolia, where she resided since August 2010. She also experienced exceptional love and comfort from the dedicated and caring staff at Dudneywood, as well as from her loyal round-the-clock caregivers, who came to know her as more than just a resident. She will be dearly missed by all. Mrs. Powell was a woman of strong faith, and a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Lewisville. She especially loved visiting with her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, James Boyette Powell; her parents, Baron L. and Wilma Starks Wylie; brothers, Frasier, Dick, and Aubrey Wiley; and sisters, Frances Riner and Anylon Hamilton. She is survived by her son, James Powell and wife, Jane of Warren, Ark.; daughters, Frances Parker and husband, Bob of Russelville, Ark.; Jean Penor and husband, Pat of Hot Springs, Ark.; and Trish DuPriest and husband, Keith of Magnolia, Ark.; grandchildren, Charlie Parker and wife, Kathy of Russelville, Ark.; Mike Penor and partner, Dustin of Conway, Ark.; Steve Penor and wife, Miranda of Hot Springs, Ark.; Lauren Zoretic and husband, Tom of Bella Vista, Ark.; and Matthew Powell of Little Rock, Ark.; and great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Brooks, and Liza Parker; Brendon and Addison Penor; and Tommy Zoretic. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Lewisville, Ark., with Bro. Howard Cole officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, Ark. Burial will follow at Wilson Cemetery in Lewisville. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps. Pallbearers will be Charlie Parker, Mike Penor, Steve Penor, Matthew Powell, Robert Whitehead, and Larry Whitehead.
