GEORGE ROSS WINHAM, age 88, departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 21, where he went to be with the Lord and join his wife and waiting family in their Heavenly world. Ross was the oldest child of George Lucullus and Helen Ruth Ross Winham. He was Born May 25, 1924, in Texarkana, Texas. His only sibling was his younger sister, Kathryne Winham Atkinson. Uncle Ross is survived by his only two living relatives, his niece, Jamie Dea Atkinson Hazlewood and his nephew, Dr. Dawson Ross Atkinson. He loved hearing about his great nephews and niece. They are Christopher Ross Atkinson, wife Libby and their son Ethan Ross, James Michael Hazlewood, Dr. Emily Kathleen Atkinson Snodgrass and her husband Capt. Michael, Daniel Dawson Atkinson and his wife Brittany. Ross graduated from Arkansas High School in 1942 and enjoyed his frequent class reunions. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1949 with a bachelors degree in business. Joining the Kappa Sigma fraternity was a major highlight in his life. He began a lifelong career in insurance in Oklahoma City where he met his wife Elizabeth Hammerschmidt. The happy couple made their home in Texarkana, Texas, where Ross operated an independent insurance agency; the same business as his father. Ross and Liz had no children. They chose to help with the Winham family and assisting in the care of his emotionally disabled little sister. As his father, mother, and sister became ill, he was there to take care of their many needs until the end. He will best known for his love, support, and dedication to his family. He was the last surviving member of the George Lucullus Winham line. Ross was laid to rest next to his wife and close to his beloved Winham family members in Rondo Cemetery in Texarkana, Ark. Funeral service was Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Beech Street Baptist Church Chapel followed by a committal service at Rondo Memorial Gardens under direction of East Funeral Home-Downtown.
