DeWayne Combs was born on October 10, 1936 at his home place in Heber Springs to the late James V. Combs and Emma Aileen Myers. He went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 24, 2013. DeWayne was a graduate of Heber Springs High School, Class of 1955. He joined the Army National Guard in 1952, at the age of 16 years. In July 1956, he went to work for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. He married his high school sweetheart, Ollie Fern Davis, on December 23, 1956. DeWayne was called up to active duty in 1961, where he served a year at Fort Bragg during the Berlin Crisis. He was transferred to Pine Bluff with the Corp in January 1964. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in August 1965. In June 1989, DeWayne was awarded the Commanders Award for Civilian Service. After forty years with the Corp, he retired. DeWayne continued working as a registered land surveyor until 1998, when he came back to his home place of Heber Springs. DeWayne loved to build model airplanes, tinker with antique cars, work on his motorcycle, and research the history of Heber Springs. He was always up for a new project. His last project was a violin that he constructed with the help of his daughter, Angela, and good friend, Herman Clark. He was very proud of this project. DeWayne was preceded in death by his father and mother; his two brothers, Charles and Albert Combs; and his two uncles, J.T. and Gene Combs. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ollie; his son, Michael (Jennifer) of Pine Bluff; daughter, Angela (Don) of Heber Springs; his three grandchildren, Sarah of Little Rock, Mandy (Robert) of Heber Springs, and Justin (Marie), also of Heber Springs; and his six great-grandchildren, Landon, Raegan, Griffin, Chasity, Maddox, and Madelyn. Visitation will be February 27, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Olmstead Chapel. The service will be February 28, 2013, at 2: p.m. also at Olmstead Chapel with interment at Heber Springs Cemetery.
