Evelyn Lewis Alexander

Evelyn Lewis Alexander, 99, of Heber Springs, Ark. died on Jan. 19, 2013. She was born on April 28, 1913, in Haynesville, La. to the late James L. and Dora Alford Lewis. She was a 1930 graduate of Haynesville High School. She married Cecil "Slick" Alexander on June 4, 193,3 in Haynesville, La., and moved to Heber Springs on June 5, 1933. They owned Alexander's Restaurant and a service station, which Slick had started with his brother, for 32 years. She was the first Municipal Court Clerk of Heber Springs and served for 33 years from 1946 to 1979. She was also a member of The Study Club, the last original member of the Monday Morning Breakfast Club that began in 1938, news reporter of the Social Scene Column in the former Cleburne County Times, an advocate of Meals on Wheels, an active member the First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs, and the Dorcas UMW Circle and many other civic organizations. An avid bridge player, she continued to play well into her ninety ninth year. She was deeply loved by her very large family and of whom she was very proud. She was especially proud to have been alive to live to see her three great, great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her sons, Cecil Alexander and wife Kathy of Heber Springs and Jim Alexander and wife Jan of Little Rock; grandchildren Tracey Hargrove (Benny) and Lesli Thomas ( Jim) of Heber Springs, Brenda Alexander and Jaimie Alexander of Rogers, Jace Alexander (LeAnn) of North Little Rock, and Christy Lock (Paul) of Houston, Texas; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; special niece Peggy Pemberton (Roger) of Haynesville, La.; daughter-in-law, Pat Alexander; a host of nieces and nephews; and faithful neighbor Jim Lay. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 21. at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs. A visitation will be held preceding the service at 1 p.m. at the church.
