Mildred Marie Salb

Mildred Marie Clark Salb, 93, of Crossett, departed this life on Monday, July 22, 2013 in her home. Her death was preceded by her husband, Dr. Robert Lee Salb on December 8, 2006. Born in 1920 in rural central Illinois to Emmons Courtney Clark and Ruth Imogene Bartholomew, Mildred was one of six children on her father's sharecropping farm. She graduated from nursing school at the Indiana City Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1942 and married Dr. Salb the same year. They lived and practiced in Indianapolis for several years before relocating to the Crossett Hospital in Ashley County. Mildred contributed greatly to medicine and care in Ashley County by designing and implementing the first crash carts at the old Crossett Hospital, leading workshops in patient care and medical standards and in her later work as a nurse at Dr. Salb's private practice which opened in downtown Crossett in 1955. She later helmed community projects and embraced her many roles as a mother, local daycare provider and event organizer with efficiency and gusto In her spare time, she maintained a voracious appetite for her hobbies: collecting and gardening. Her family will miss her leadership and her surprisingly mischievous sense of humor. Mildred is survived by her two children, Virginia Lee Salb of Marshall, Illinois and Karl Leo Salb of Crossett, Ark.; five grandchildren, Ben Hockett (Erica), Karen Bennett (Even), Amanda Salb, Charlene Salb and Alex Salb; and six great-grandchildren. Alex Miller, Gabrielle and Brecon Bennett, Bo, Daisy and Archie Hockett. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Pinewood Memorial Park with Bro. Will Stratten officiating under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett, Ark. (www.jonesservice.com). Memorials may be made to the Ashley County Skilled Workcenter, 208 N.
