Martha McDaniel Baugher

MARTHA MCDANIEL BAUGHER passed away six days after her 92nd birthday on May 28, 2013. She was the daughter of Frank McDaniel and Wilma Howard McDaniel. She lived a full and rich life. Her mother died when she was six. She was raised in Cape Girardeau, Mo., by her beloved aunt, Avis Howard, in her maternal grandparents' (Robert and Esther Howard) home. Avis Howard was a school teacher and excellent role model for a young girl. From her, Martha learned the importance of family, education, and service to others. When she was 15 years old, she met the love of her life, George A. Baugher Jr. who lived around the corner from her grandparents. Before her husband was deployed overseas in WWII, she would take the train to where he was stationed. She especially enjoyed the time they spent in Santa Rosa, Calif. While he was on active duty in Europe, she worked for the Army Air Corp Command in St. Louis, Mo. After the war, they moved from St. Louis, Mo. to Wichita, Kan. before settling in the Lakewood Subdivision in North Little Rock, Ark.. They were married for over 44 years before his death in 1986. She was the mother of two sons, Michael K. Baugher and George A. Baugher III. She spent many hours watching baseball games, chaperoning field trips, and being a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of North Little Rock and member of Park Hill Presbyterian Church. She chaired the first follies fundraiser for the North Little Rock Junior Auxiliary (later the Junior League) and served in leadership positions in the Women of the Church. After her sons were older, she worked for the American Cancer Society. Later she became an area coordinator with the Equal Opportunity Agency (EOA). She set up a medical clinic for the Marche area using volunteer medical staff, donated medical supplies, and medicines. EOA officials from Washington D.C. heard about the clinic and came to Arkansas to see it. After visiting the clinic, they decided to use it as a model. Martha was very artistic. She enjoyed playing bridge, ballroom dancing, painting, needlepoint, knitting, and collecting Christmas decorations. She had fond memories of family vacations in Florida and traveling in Mexico and New England with her husband. She loved baking cookies, drawing, and coloring with her grandchildren when they were young. She is survived by her two sons, Mike Baugher (Jan) and George Baugher III (Kathy); her three grandchildren, Matthew Baugher, Josh Baugher (Vanessa) and Megan Baugher; her four great-grandchildren, Zoë, Abbey, Hayli and Koen Baugher; her brother's children in New York and her beloved cousin's children in Las Vegas. She was predeceased by her husband, George; her brother, Robert; and her beloved cousin, Tex King, who she thought of as her younger brother. The family would like to thank Hospice Home Care for the care they provided. Memorials may be made to Park Hill Presbyterian Church, 3520 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, North Little Rock, Ark. 72116 or to a charity of your choice. Roller Owens Funeral Home in North Little Rock handled the arrangements.
