Carl Bentley (Dude) Haynie

Carl Bentley (Dude) Haynie, Jr. of Sherwood died Monday, March 25, 2013, in Little Rock, Ark. He was born April 27, 1931 in North Little Rock, Ark. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jo Ann Haynie, his parents, Carl B. Haynie, Sr. and Mary Brown Haynie, and his son-in-law, Pat Spears. A 1949 graduate of North Little Rock High School, he graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1954 where he played football, baseball and ran track. He was also senior class vice-president. His education was interrupted by a one year active duty stint in the U.S. Army at Ft. Sill, Okls. He did his practice teaching under legendary Coach Wilson Matthews at Little Rock Central, then was hired as a biology, physical education and assistant football coach at Hot Springs High School. He eventually became head football coach and assistant principal at HSHS. He was an assistant coach in the 1962 High School Football Coachs' Association All-Star game at War Memorial Stadium. He completed his Master's Degree at Henderson State University and a Education Specialist degree from the University of Arkansas. In 1965, he left teaching/coaching, moved to Sherwood, became a textbook representative for American Book Company, a position he held for 30 years even as the company changed hands many times. He was president of the Arkansas Bookman's Association for one year and was instrumental in the founding of Educator Book's Depository. He was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a member of Park Hill Presbyterian Church. He had previously attended First Presbyterian Church of North Little Rock, Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian in Fairfield Bay, and Highland Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs. He was a Mason. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and attending Razorback Football and Basketball games with the gang from Educators Book Depository. He is survived by his son John Haynie and wife June of Roland, his daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Spears of Fayetteville, granddaughter, Melanie Gilliam and husband TJ Gilliam of Jackson, Trnn., granddaughter Emily Spears of Fayetteville, and great-grandchildren Trey and Mary Claire Gilliam of Jackson, Tenn. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Park Hill Presbyterian Church, 3520 JFK Blvd., North Little Rock. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.
