Lavon "Slick" Higginbotham

Mr. Lavon "Slick" Higginbotham, 88, of Hamburg, died Monday, May 6, 2013. Mr. Higginbotham was a native and life long resident of Hamburg and Ashley County. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II and where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He worked for the United States Postal Service in Crossett and Hamburg for 25 years. He was an active and loyal member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a member of the American Legion, a Mason and a member of the Promise Land Masonic Lodge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is preceded in death by his wife, Oreece Kelley Higginbotham; his parents, Gaston & Janie Venters Higginbotham and a brother, Frank Higginbotham. He is survived by a son, Marion Higginbotham of Crossett; three daughters, Marilyn Chambers of Hamburg, Barbara Gifford of Crossett and Judy Pierce of North Little Rock; three brothers, Pete, James and Norman Higginbotham all of Hamburg; four sisters, Annie Jo Smith of Crossett, Betty Eubanks and Margaret Riley both of Hamburg and Louise Pelton of Eudora; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Promise Land Cemetery. Pallbearers are William Streeter, Drake Streeter, David Streeter, Zack Lauhon, Jackie Lauhon, Jason Pierce, Jacob Meeks, Morris Knight and Ben Wood. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the First Baptist Church Men's Sunday School Class. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
