Nikki Hewitt Garrett, age 40 of the Big Creek Community, died Sunday afternoon, September 29, 2013 at her home after battling cancer for nearly twelve years. She was born on November 2, 1972 in Hot Springs to Eddie Hewitt and Mary Alice James Hewitt. Reared and receiving her education in both the Malvern and Poyen School Districts, she was a loving wife, mother, and friend. Growing up attending Big Creek Baptist Church, she was currently a member of Calvary Southern Baptist Church. Anyone who knew Nikki knew how big her heart was. Always trying to be of help to someone in need, she was a tireless volunteer in many local organizations, including the Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She was an inaugural board member of the Harvest of Hope, was the first on the scene looking for her delivery list when the Community Thanksgiving and Christmas Meals were underway, and made sure that folks had clothes when they experienced the loss of their belongings to a house fire, through the "Clothes Closet" at Calvary Church. Nikki loved children, and home schooled her own, so that she could teach them her moral beliefs and the love of Christ who strengthened her. She worked at First Baptist Church in their Day Care Center while her health permitted. She is survived by her husband, Waylon Garrett, to whom she was married on October 1, 1997; her son, Zane Neel, and her daughter, Taylor Garrett, all of the Big Creek Community; her parents, Eddie and Mary Alice Hewitt of Big Creek; a brother, Aaron Hewitt (Jennifer) of Arkadelphia; three nephews, Tyler, Ayden, and Phoenix Hewitt. Nikki was also preceded in death by a son, Zachary Garrett, an aunt, Judy James Draper, and her grandparents, Herbert and Mary James, Buck and Pauline Morgan, and Fay and Beade Hewitt. The family will receive friends at J.A. Funk Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday morning, October 3, 2013 in the sanctuary of Second Baptist Church with Brothers Mark Thornton and Jim Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in the Big Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Randy Gill, Sam Gill, Jeff Jones, Casey Jones, Brady Gray, Chris Allen, Jon James, and Wade Kinnu. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Copayment Assistance Foundation which helps folks pay for chemotherapy, at www.cancercarecopay.org/support-us/ or to the Jack and Jill Foundation, at www.jajf.org/donate/index.cfm.
