Sarah (Sally) Catherine Stauffer Goesl, 96, of Texarkana, Texas died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in her home. She was born May 19, 1917, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, a homemaker, philanthropist, Member of Central Christian Church, Lone Star DAR, Wednesday Music Club, Charter Member of Women for the Arts and longtime resident of Texarkana. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Doug Chewning, two sons and daughters-in-law, Ladd and Jeanne Goesl and Brian and Patti Goesl, all of Texarkana; grandchildren Anna & Gresham Richter of Little Rock, Drew Goesl of Washington, DC, Sarah and Christopher Chewning of Dallas, and Cecelia and Ben Goesl of Texarkana; two great grandchildren August and Charlie Richter of Little Rock;and nephew Peter A. Stauffer of West Virginia. Sally graduated from Muskingum University and trained to be a dietician. She met the love of her life, Dr. Andrew Goesl, while serving as Chief Dietician at the same hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he was serving his residency. Sally and Andy were married for 68 years until his death in 2010. During the early 1960's, she was a volunteer with the Texas Women's Auxiliary which was instrumental in establishing hearing and eye tests for children in all of the public and private elementary schools in Texarkana. Sally went on to become President of the Auxiliary for the State of Texas in 1971 and initiated the screening for childhood diseases of children in Texas public schools. Following Andy's retirement, the two could often be seen volunteering at the Discovery Center and Christus St. Michaels Hospital. Both will long be remembered for their generosity in supporting local non-profits through the Andrew G. and Sarah S. Goesl Foundation. She was known for always having a smile on her face, her ability of seeing the best in everyone she met, and a positive attitudeno matter how adverse the situation. The Family would like to thank Hospice of Texarkana, Cornerstone Retirement Community and care givers Tashina, Brandy, Marie, Brenda, Mary, Stephanie and the generous staff who have provided friendship, love and medical care throughout the years. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. at Cornerstone Retirement Community, 4100 Moores Lane in Texarkana.
