John William Vinson, passed away in peace and comfort on the afternoon of October 12, 2013 in his home surrounded by his closest loved ones. John was born to Nancy and Lt Col (Ret.) Vernon "Whitey" Vinson, USAF in Columbus, Mississippi on April 13, 1951. He lived a life of integrity, goodness and great fun, playing golf whenever possible. He had three loves in his life – golf, music and family (not in that order). His love for the game of golf cannot be overstated; the man could play. Golf took him all over the South to play in small-town scrambles with Cecilia (and often times Shannon and Josh making an unstoppable four-person team), the Arkansas State Golf Association Father-Son which he and Josh played in for 16 years and across the equator to South America where he represented Arkansas on the Mid-South Cup Team. Along the way, John won a lot of 1st places but most of all others remember his camaraderie, sportsmanship, positive attitude, unwavering integrity, dry sense of humor and of course, his music. Whether it was playing tunes out of his golf cart, driving his children to school listening to the Carpenters, working at the Platter Inn on Main Street or owning his own business the Hi-Fi House in Batesville, John loved his music. But the most important thing to John was his family. His children remember how he taught them to "just do right," the value of a dollar, how to create webpages (which John did for the ASGA and his beloved high school class from Batesville High School –bhs1969.com), to "never end a sentence in a preposition" and that love can be unspoken and understood. Throughout his life he kept a positive attitude, unwavering integrity and wonderful sense of humor, always wearing a smile. John was a great husband, loving father and is survived by his wife Cecilia, children Shannon and Josh, brother Buddy, two sisters Martha and Jane, two grandsons James and Luke and his beloved dog Buster and sidekicks Bandit and Gracie. Funeral service will be held this Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Maumelle, October 19th at 10 a.m., 1201 Edgewood Dr., Maumelle, Ark. 72113. In honor of John's casual style, golf attire is suggested but optional. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. If you wish to make a donation in honor of John, his favorite organization was the Humane Society. We encourage all friends and family to share their words of remembrance at: www.johnwilliamvinson.com.
