Mr. Coleman C. Matthews, 92, of Hector, Arkansas, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at his grandson's residence in Hamburg. Mr. Matthews was a native of Hector; a former resident of Portland for 50 years having moved back to Hector 20 years ago. He was a Baptist, a retired farmer and a veteran of the United States Navy where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He enjoyed life, loved his family and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Brown Matthews in 1993; his parents, Larkin and Minnie Coffman Matthews; five brothers, Leroy, Archie, John, Galyn and Harvey Matthews; four sisters, Gladys Fuller, Exie McQuin, Berlin & Verlin Winters. He is survived by his children, Coleman (Pete) Matthews and his wife, Eunice, of Hamburg; Connie Gaskill of Summerville, South Carolina and Barbara Owens of Hector; a brother, Lewis Matthews of Crossett; two sisters, Mary Bell Ricks of Hamburg and Frances Hennington of Portland, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral service and burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013 in the Portland Cemetery with Coleman Matthews and Rev. E.W. Ricks officiating. Pallbearers are Ray Hennington, Franklin Ricks, Rodney Ricks, Michael Matthews, Billy Sellers, Johnny Matthews, Gary Matthews, Kenny Matthews and Henry Matthews. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 901 N. University Avenue, Little Rock, Ark. 72207.
