Andrew Mason Monfee Jr., DVM, 89, of Russellville, formerly a longtime resident and veterinarian in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. Born January 21, 1924, in Pratt City, Alabama, he was the son of the late Andrew Mason Monfee, Sr. and Louise Stoves Monfee. He was reared and received his early education in the Birmingham, Alabama area, graduating from Ensley High School. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He achieved the rank of Mineman Second Class, serving on the USS Preble (DM 20) and stationed at US Naval Ammunition Depot, Hawthorne, Nevada. After serving in World War II, he returned to Alabama, where he enrolled in Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his Doctorate in 1952 and began his long career of caring for animals. In 1953, he moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he opened Monfree Animal Clinic. For thirty-three years, he treated the beloved pets of Pine Bluff and Jefferson County. He retired in 1986, closing the clinic. In 1954, he married Bertha Moseley, together they had three children. They shared nearly sixty years of happiness, love and memories. Dr. Monfee was active in the Pine Bluff community, serving as Past Commander of Pine Bluff Power Squadron, Past President of Jefferson County Wildlife Association and Past President of Arkansas Practitioner Association. He was a member of the Pine Bluff Saddle Club and the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Pine Bluff. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Monfee, of Russellville; his son, Dr. Andrew M. Monfee III, of Russellville; his daughters, Anne Price, of Conway and Michelle Ransom, of Little Rock; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Berry, of Birmingham, Alabama. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son, with Reverend Todd Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Cemetery.
