David Carroll Powell, RMCM USN Ret., 80, of Bryant passed away August 17, after a lengthly battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born March 3, 1934 in Gillett, Arkansas to Bradford W. Powell and Laverne Powell Ball. He joined the US Navy in 1952 and served 22 proud years, earning numerous commendations for outstanding service. All of his years were served on the West Coast, with the exception of four years stationed at the Naval Reserve Training Facility in Camden, Ark. After retirement from the Navy, he served as administrative assistant to the Arkansas County Judge, served four elected terms as Arkansas County Clerk and was employed in the Arkansas State Auditor's office. David was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bob W. Powell and Brad Powell, and one sister, Darlene Hollman. He is survived by three sisters, Barbara Holzhauer of Gillett, Ark., Jane Faught of North Little Rock, Ark., and Alicia Donner of Jonesboro, Ark. Also surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Sandra and four sons, David Powell Jr. of Livingston, Texas, Robert Powell and Victoria of Benton, Ark., Scott Powell and Tracey of Cibolo, Texas, and Brett Powell and Stacey of Arkadelphia, Ark. He leaves to cherish his memory 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Bryant First United Methodist Church, the VFW, DAV, and American Legion. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at Forest Hills Funeral Home in Alexander. A service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014, 10 am at Bryant United Methodist Church, with Rev. Hammett Evans officiating.
