James Allison Pitcock

James Allison Pitcock, M.D., age 84 died in Memphis, Tennessee on August 19, 2014, after a long illness. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School. His undergraduate degree was a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with honors. He graduated four years later from Washington University School of Medicine earning the M.D. He married Cynthia DeHaven also of Little Rock and began his residency training at Vanderbilt University in surgery. The following year he returned to Washington University in St. Louis and completed specialty training in pathology. He was obligated to serve two years in the military and as a Captain in the Air Force he co-directed Balcones Space Laboratories in Austin, Texas for the U.S. Air Force and the University of Texas. Dr. Pitcock and his family moved to Memphis, Tenn. when he joined the pathology department of Baptist Memorial Hospital. He achieved an international reputation in research and became head of pathology at the University of Tennessee/Baptist Memorial Hospitals until his retirement. Dr. Pitcock is survived by his wife, Cynthia DeHaven Pitcock, PhD, his children Allison Pitcock Fentress and James DeHaven Pitcock and four grandchildren. The family will meet friends at the Memorial Park Funeral Home at Yates and Poplar in Memphis from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 24. Burial will be a private graveside service.
