EVELYN BERNADETTE SAVILLE–MATHEWS, 85, passed away on Aug. 25, 2014 in North Little Rock, Ark. She was born on June 24, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maizie and Foster Shappy; husbands, Charles Robertson Saville and Wheeler Mathews; a daughter, Valarie Saville Garland; and one great-grandson, Alexander Garland. Evelyn is survived by two children and their spouses: son, Leslie Saville (Linda) of North Little Rock; daughter, Deirdre Saville Lee (Scott) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of Sherwood, Ark: Liesel Garland Riley (Zack), Elizabeth, Matthew, Isaac, Caleb; Jason Garland (Tania), Ricky; Lindsie Saville Moseley (Greg), Aubryn, Addyson; Lance Saville (Sarah); and her dog, Daisy. The family moved from Plattsburgh, N.Y. to Sherwood, Ark., in 1958. Evelyn was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She kept busy with the activities of her children whether it was dance, guitar, or piano lessons, but she did carve out time for herself. She was a graduate of Capitol Business College and worked at DHS of AR and Fones Brothers for a number of years. She later got a degree in ceramics and for years, taught at Willow House and local recreation centers. She was active with the Arkansas Ceramic Association for 45 years and recently was made a Lifetime Member. She amassed many awards for her beautiful ceramic and porcelain pieces, and was known for her Porcelain Old World Santas that she made for each family member. She was a past president and long time volunteer for the American Legion. Through her second husband, Wheeler, she was active for 28 years in the Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Also, she was the secretary and organized the reunions for Wheeler's Navy Amphibious Group – Acorn 52. They traveled to many state functions in their RV for the Navy reunions and Eagles. She looked forward to the family gatherings and enjoyed being with her family. She always had a bountiful Christmas or an Italian spaghetti and meatball dinner. Beginning at age 80, due to health problems, she passed this honor onto her daughter-in-law, Linda. Mother was referred to as the "Matriarch" of the family, and always stated, "But no one listens to me." She loved gardening and making new flower gardens each year. She was known for her love of music and dancing the "Jitterbug." This feisty Italian woman put up a brave fight for the past five years. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
