Leona Minnie Smith

Leona Minnie Schroeder Smith was born August 20, 1929 in La Vernia, Texas. She passed away February 9, 2014. Leona was the fifth of six children born to Herman Schroeder and Lena Wagner Schroeder. After graduating high school she lived in many places. She moved to Arkansas in 1965 and married Floyd W. Smith in 1966. She was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church at La Vernia. Leona was a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church in Heber Springs where she was a part of the Mary Circle, Bible Study, Sunday School, Altar Guild, and Choir. Leona was active in her community as well: Hopewell Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary, TOPS, E.H.C. and South Crossroads quilting group. She was a talented quilter and gave many away to both the needy and her beloved "little greats". Leona was preceded in death by her husband, four siblings, step-daughter, two grandsons and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by sister Evelyn Gateley of Baxter, Tenn., numerous nieces and nephews in Tennessee and Texas. Leona didn't like the word step, so Floyd's daughters Paulette, Barbara (deceased), Frances and Regina became hers. Grandchildren are Lynn, John, Elizabeth, Kyle, Kelly, Clay and Sarah. Great-grandchildren are Danny, Gavin, Sarah Bess, Travis, Nathan, Adam, Brooke, Joe, Mary, Autumn, Jacob and Patrick. Great-great-grandchildren are Ashlynn and Arron. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Hope Lutheran in Heber Spirngswith interment in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Building Fund.
