Walker Preston Smith

Walker Preston Smith passed away on July 14, 2014. He was born in Little Rock on October 30, 1938 to Arthur Wilburn Smith and Syble Love Smith. Mr. Smith was a teacher, principal, author, publisher and business owner. He retired from the Arkansas Department of Correction School District where he served as Principal at the Maximum Security Unit at Tucker. He also served as a Pre-G.E.D. Teacher at the Tucker Unit (before it became the Women's Unit), the Pine Bluff Unit and the Cummins Unit. Mr. Smith taught school at Fourth Street Junior High School in the North Little Rock School District, as well as at Malvern, Prattsville, Poyen, Horatio, Bingham Road Academy in Little Rock, Luxora, and Stanton Road School in Little Rock. Subjects he taught included math, social studies, science, journalism and driver education. Mr. Smith also had over 30 years experience as a business owner, marketing portraits, stereo tapes, chemicals and books. He was the author/publisher of the following books: "Jokebook of the Century, Volumes I, II and III", "How To Start Your Own Business", "Forms For Business, Volumes I and II" and "Consumers Should Know, Volumes I, II and III". He received his education in the Little Rock School District, graduating from Little Rock Central High School in 1955. He furthered his education at Little Rock University (now UALR), where he was in the first graduating class when it became a four-year university, receiving a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. He completed graduate work at Tulane University in New Orleans, the University of Arkansas Graduate Center in Little Rock, where he received a Masters Degree in Education, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (off-campus program). He also attended Texarkana Community College, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and Pulaski Vo-Tech (now Pulaski Technical College). Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Smith Jones and her husband, David of Germantown Tenn., and his son, Carey Smith and his wife, Andi of Little Rock. He is also survived by his three grandchildren. Wesley Jones, Bailey Jones and Emery Claire Smith. A graveside service will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Little Rock at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19th.
