Lola Hughes, 97, of Searcy went to be with the Lord, Friday, July 18, 2014. She was born April 27, 1917 to the late Luther and Beulah Baker Whitten. Lola and Cleston met while she was teaching school at Mt. Pisgah. She had many fond stories of her school-teaching days, and the love felt between her and her students. There is the story about how they all drank from the same dipper in the water bucket, the wood stove used for heating the school, and even stories about how several students would just go home with her to her parent's house, and spend the night, sleeping on a pallet. Lola practiced hospitality to everyone, and was quick to share vegetables from her garden, or a piece of her homemade pies with anyone who would come through the door. Up until just a few days before her death, she was helping with dishwashing, folding of clothes, or whatever she could do to help. She was a precious mother, loving wife, and grandmother, and a wonderful mother-in-law. We will all miss her greatly! She is survived by one son, Edwin Hughes and wife, Wynette of Searcy; two grandchildren, Dr. Brad Hughes and Marshall Hughes; two nieces; and two nephews; and Verna Grimes her beloved caretaker. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her husband, AC Hughes; three sisters, Mable Hudson, Sarah Grace Marsh, and Lanell Baker; one nephew, Barry Baker. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014 at Trinity Baptist Church. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2014 at Trinity Baptist Church with burial following at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Share a Memory: www.SearcyMcEuenFuneralHome.com.
