Donald Leslie Sample

Donald Leslie Sample, 80, of West Memphis died Thursday, May, 8, 2014 at Crittenden Regional Hospital. He was born on February 25, 1934 in Hazen, Ark. to the late Leslie and Hazel Eddins Sample. He grew up on the family farm in Biscoe and graduated from DeValls Bluff High School in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War he returned to Prairie County to farm before moving to West Memphis in 1960. His career in the office machine business began at Olivetti-Underwood in Memphis and he later retired from Collins Distributing Company where he was a partner. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he had faithfully worshipped and served his Lord for 50 years. Free time was spent flying his small plane, hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening, or just keeping the lawn manicured. He had a special talent for repairing most anything, building something, or creating stained glass. He was a people person, loved his family and he really loved his wife of 58 years who has been his caregiver during a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Joy Waters Sample; son, Steve Sample of West Memphis; daughter, Sherri (Dave) Trosper of Oakland, Tenn.; grandsons, Sean O'Donnell of Kelseyville, Calif. and Dustin (Allison) Adams of West Memphis; granddaughter, Kasandra (Jason) Orozco of Baltimore, Md.; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, James (Dorothy) of Marion, Ark. and Bobby (Janice) of Biscoe, Ark. Visitation will be held, Monday, May 12, 2014 from 12-1 p.m. with service immediately following at Roller-Citizens in West Memphis. Interment will be at Hazen Cemetery, Hazen, Ark.
