Harriett Hankins McClendon

HARRIETT HANKINS MCCLENDON, 99, who lived at Parkway Village in Little Rock was welcomed into Heaven on Oct. 24, 2014. She was born May 12, 1915 in Warren, Ark., and lived in Warren for the first 87 years of her life. She was the daughter of the late Charles Felton Hankins and Athleen Martin Hankins and the great-great granddaughter of Captain Hugh Bradley for whom Bradley County was named. She was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Warren. She was educated at The College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark., where she was a Homecoming Queen. She was a member of the Warren Junior Auxiliary and an avid golfer who enjoyed playing through her mid-80's. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Thornton McClendon whom she married Jan. 21, 1937. He died July 16, 2002, soon after they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Felton Martin Hankins, of Warren and sister, Betty Hankins Henry, of Pine Bluff. She is survived by: two sons, Charles Alfred McClendon and spouse Carol of Roswell, Ga., and Mike McClendon and spouse Judy of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Lesley McClendon of Atlanta, Ga., Matt McClendon and spouse Suzanne of Little Rock, Liz McClendon Longworth and spouse Pat of Little Rock, and Mary Kathryn McClendon Emmons and spouse Matt of Richardson, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren. Harriett will be buried in her hometown of Warren, Ark., following a family graveside service. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28 at First Presbyterian Church of Warren, 212 East Church Street, officiated by Rev. Philip Faris. The family would like to thank her many friends and staff at Parkway Village who loved her dearly and were like family to her, and special thanks to Carolyn Sterns who cared for her and loved her like her own mother during her final days.
