James Odell Gates

JAMES ODELL GATES, 71, of Little Rock, Ark., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas after a relentless battle with cancer. Born Aug. 8, 1943 in Humnoke, Ark., Jim was one of four children born to the late Isaac Newton and Gladys Gates. While stationed at Pease Air Force base in NH he met the love of his life, Joan Folger. They settled in Little Rock, Ark. where they raised two children. Jim had a long professional career both as a CFO of various companies, and an owner of various successful businesses. He also became involved in a children's non-profit hospice, Kaleidoscope of Caring, Inc. where he formed a grief center to support grieving children and their families. Jim is predeceased by his parents; and sister, Martha Stobaugh. He is survived by wife, Joan Gates; daughter, Kimberly Griffin and husband, David; son, Tony Gates and wife, Dawn; brother, John Gates and wife, Pat of California; brother, Melvin Gates and wife, Linda. He was proudly called "Poopa" by his four wonderful grandchildren, Christopher and Connor Griffin, Emmarie and Spencer Gates. Jim will be known by his family and friends as one who had many talents, a huge heart, and always giving of his time.
