Harry Ambrose Pickens

Harry Ambrose Pickens was born in Dallas, Texas to James Wayne and Ruth Shipman Pickens and passed away Aug. 4, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He grew up in North Little Rock, Ark. and attended North Little Rock High School. He attended Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. where he graduated with Honors in 1953. While attending Hendrix College, he met the love of his life, Jacquelyn Ballew. They were married in Aug. 1953, prior to his enrolling in the Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I. After completion of OCS training, he was stationed at Bayonne, N.J. and later in Athens, Ga. Harry was assigned to the USS Proton, and served in Japan and during the Korean War, as a Supply Officer. He also served in the Naval Reserve. His final rank was Lieutenant. He had many interesting jobs and places of employment including Proctor and Gamble in Ohio, the Game and Fish Commission in Arkansas, had his own CPA and Accounting Practice in Little Rock, Ark., CAMPA and Associated Milk Producers Incorporated, where he served as the Corporate Comptroller at the time of his retirement. He and Jackie were fortunate to have close friends in San Antonio and Arkansas, and made many friends across the country during their trips in their motor home. He will be well remembered by his family and friends for his witty sense of humor, intelligence and immense computer skills. He always had the newest and best "technology," and he loved teaching others about computers, iPhones, and Apple products. He was not only Dad and husband, but also best friend. He will be greatly missed. Harry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacquelyn B. Pickens; daughter, Meryl Burchardt and husband, Mike Burchardt of China Spring, Texas; daughter, Jeri McKinley and husband, Les McKinley of Houston, Texas; and son, David B. Pickens of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Carlos Alvaraz-Meraz, Dr. Manual Santiago, Dr. William Craig, and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care. Per Harry's request, a small family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Gentiva Hospice Foundation, St. Jude's Hospital, Community Bible Church of San Antonio, or the organization of your choice.
