Evelyn Jean Newcomb

Evelyn Jean Newcomb passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2015 after a brief illness. Evelyn Jean was born to Pearl and Alfred Pigg on November 11, 1929 in Osceola, Arkansas where she was raised and lived her entire life. She graduated as Valedictorian from Osceola High School, class of 1947and then attended Lindenwood College. After her freshman year she transferred and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1950 where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Returning to her hometown of Osceola , she worked for Florida Brothers Bank. She met Guy Newcomb of Blue Mountain, Mississippi, a recent Ole Miss School of Pharmacy graduate. They were married on February 10, 1953. After Guy's service with the United States Air Force the couple settled in Osceola and grew their business into four local gift-drugstores. Mrs. Newcomb was the primary buyer for all of the stores, and continued after her husband's death. In later years they purchased Stonewall Plantation on Bee Lake in Tchula, Mississippi, enjoying farming life. Guy passed away there in 1985. Evelyn Jean was active in the community and civic life in Osceola and throughout the state with her husband. She was a member of the Progressive Club, PEO and a life- long active member of First United Methodist Church. She was an asset to her husband in hosting, entertaining and welcoming national and state leaders as well as new industry to Osceola. She loved sharing her home, enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and needlepoint. She and Guy enjoyed traveling with long time dear friends. Suggie, as she was known to dear ones, is survived by her daughter, Lyn Aust (Gil) of Huntsville, Alabama and John Newcomb of Osceola, Arkansas and Bee Lake, Mississippi. She is predeceased by son, Blan Newcomb who died in1979. She leaves three grandchildren, Blan Newcomb (Bonnie), Nick Newcomb, all of Jackson, Mississippi and Lee Evelyn Wiginton of Huntsville, Alabama. Evelyn Jean will be remembered as a beautiful gracious lady, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Osceola, Arkansas or Arkansas Northeastern College toward the Newcomb Memorial Scholarship. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 15 at First United Methodist Church, 303 South Pecan Street, Osceola, Ark.
