Joseph H. Miller, Esq., 85, of Monroe, La. passed away peacefully Monday. He was a U.S. Army veteran and attended Talladega College, Talladega, Ala. He received his Juris Doctorate Degree from Howard University, where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was President and Chairman of the Miller Companies which included Miller Funeral Home and Reliable Life Insurance Co. of Monroe. Under his administration, acquisitions included funeral homes in Bastrop, Columbia, Rayville, Tallulah, Ruston and Minden, La., in addition to Dubisson Funeral Home and Eagle Life Insurance Co. which later became Freedon Natl. Life Ins. Co. of Little Rock, Ark. His professional affiliations included member of the California Bar Assoc.; board member of the Louisiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors; board member of the Monroe Housing Authority; former President of the National Insurance Assoc. and a member of The 100 Black Men of Greater Monroe. He is survived by wife, Cleo, sons, Darryl, Rick and Scott all of Monroe and Carrington of Washington, D.C., daughter, Vicki of Monroe, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and pal Freddy (family dog). Services 10 a.m. Monday, First Baptist Church 507 Swayze St., Monroe, entombment follows at Mulhearn Memorial Park. Visitation Mon. from 2-6 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home 318 388-3000.
