Dorsey (Al) Allen Askew Jr.

Dorsey (Al) Allen Askew Jr., age 90, of Olathe, Kan., passed away on January 18, 2015 at Nottingham Health and Rehab Center in Olathe, Kan. He was born July 8, 1924 in Ardmore, Okla. to Dorsey Allen Sr. and Florence M. (Semon) Askew. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Alice Marie (Kendall) Askew, his parents, and his only sibling Dean Lee Askew. Al graduated in May of 1941 from Mackville H.S. at the age of 16. He enrolled at Hutchinson J.C. in January of 1942. He enlisted in the Navy in March of 1943. Following his father's pioneering footsteps in aviation. Al graduated from Naval Flight School, Pensacola, Fla., in July of 1944. Al and Alice Marie were married September 25, 1944. In the service Al flew reconnaissance missions over the South Atlantic at the end of WWII. After the war, Al graduated from Kansas State University in January 1949 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with an electrical option. He went to work for G.E. in 1949 and was employed in various locations for 34 years, earning several awards for his salesmanship. Al and Alice Marie enjoyed retirement by traveling the country in their R.V. and settling in Bella Vista, Ark for 15 years. They returned to the Kansas City area in 2005. Al is survived by his children Douglas (Jan Burlingame) of Camdenton, Mo.; Pamela Buster (Alan) of Larned/Olathe, Kan. and Thomas (Karen) of Olathe, Kan. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the care givers at Cedar Lake Village and Nottingham Health and Rehab center in Olathe for their kindness and compassion in caring for Al. A visitation will be held at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kan. from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Thursday, January 22, 2015 also at the chapel. Memorials may be given to Harvesters, 3801 Topping Ave., Kansas City, Mo. 64129 or to the Cedar Lake Village Assisted Living Memory Care Unit that is under construction, 15325 S.
