Lucy Margaret Taylor Bentley

Lucy Margaret Taylor Bentley, 101 years of age, passed away on June 8, 2015. She was born in Paragould, Arkansas, on January 15, 1914, to Bessie Hawes Taylor and Robert Pierce Taylor. She moved with her family to Little Rock, Arkansas, in January of 1927. In 1930, she graduated from Little Rock High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music for a year and was a member of Delta Omicron Music Sorority. She then attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority. She graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in French. After teaching for two years in Arkansas, she moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, to teach. It was there that she met and married Llewellyn E. Bentley Jr., on December 24, 1937. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Mrs. Bentley was a charter member of the Coterie Study Club and served as its president along with other offices. She was a member of the Literary Forum. She also was an early member of the Morehouse Historical Society and served as its membership chairperson for several years. Mrs. Bentley is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Llewellyn Eldridge Bentley Jr.; a brother, Bayard Taylor of Little Rock, and a niece, Betsy Hawes Taylor of Little Rock. She is survived by her son, John Taylor Bentley, and his wife, Mary Jane; her son, Charles Llewellyn Bentley; her grandson, Christopher Ethridge Bentley, and wife, Leigh; her granddaughter, Mary Taylor Lewis, and husband, Jim; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor Anding Bentley, James Sutton Lewis, Christopher Lambright Bentley and Bentley Elizabeth Lewis all of Monroe, Louisiana. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pierce Taylor Jr. of North Little Rock, Arkansas; one niece; two nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. There will be a private burial service. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Bastrop. A memorial service will follow immediately thereafter at 3 p.m. at the church with Rev. Henry R. Stone officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
