Mildred Gray

Mildred Malone Gray, age 92, of Fayetteville, passed away on March 11, 2015. She was born September 10, 1922 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Oscar Malone and Nannie Mae Malone. She married the love of her life, Jarrell D. Gray, on March 6, 1944. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1994. Mildred delighted in telling how she and Jarrell dated a short time before he went into the service following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Later, while home on leave, they married on March 6, 1944. Jarrell left for the European Theatre on March 9, 1944 and she did not see him for three years. Mildred taught at several schools in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Washington and Leverett Elementary Schools. Mildred's love of books and learning continued after she retired and moved to Butterfield Trail Village. She helped start the library at Butterfield Trail Village and until recently, she could be seen daily organizing books in the library. Mildred and Jarrell did not have children but she is survived by her chosen family; Jim and Alice Ann Bassett, Cyanna Bassett Clausen and twin daughters Katy and Alyssa Clausen, Jimmy Bassett, Jr, Tabitha (Tabi) Lipscomb and daughters Cari Beth and Annie Kate. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2015 at Moore's Chapel, 206 West Center St., Fayetteville, Arkansas, followed by burial at Fairview Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Moore's Chapel.
