SSGT Gene Stewart, 89, of Fayetteville passed away Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Arkansas Veterans Home at Fayetteville. He was born February 8, 1926 in Joplin, Mo., the son of the late Jack and Bertha McKee Stewart. He grew-up in Durham; attended Durham School; was inducted in the U.S. Army of August, 1944; and retired after 20 years, 6 months and 15 days. In civilian life, he was a former employee of Elkhart Products Company and Whit Chevrolet (Nelms). Gene was saved in his home by Paul Dennis and was baptized on January 20, 1991 at Sang Ave. Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gina Gail Peacock; sister, Helen Brewer; a brother, Guy Stewart; and a nephew, Ray Brewer. He is survived by three sisters, Betty Rogers and Peggy Nickell, both of Elkins; and Thelma Glisson of Fayetteville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Beard's Chapel with Ray Niblock officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Beard's Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to service-time on Thursday at the funeral home.
