Gene Travis Andrews, 76, of Springdale, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville. He was born Dec. 27, 1938 in Lebanon, Mo. to Don and Billie Travis Andrews. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. After graduation he went into the United States Army where he served for three years. After discharge he went to Neosho School of Water and Sewer. Gene was the manager of the Springdale Waste Water Treatment Plant. He received many awards including the Hatfield Award and was also inducted into the Arkansas Select Society of Sludge Shovelers. He retired in 2002 after 38 years of service. He was an avid golfer; he loved to cook out. He enjoyed restoring old cars, and a big fan of NASCAR. But most of all, he loved being a "papaw". He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, June Reid. Survivors include his wife, Betty Andrews, of 54 years of the home; one daughter, Debby Lynn Apon and husband Gary Dean Apon; three grandchildren, Arika Gene Apon-Fite and husband Wayne, Aimee Lynn Apon and Travis Dean Apon; and three great-grandchildren, Michael Dean Fite, Alysa Lynn Fite and Zayne Andrew Fite, all of Springdale, Ark.; one brother, Ronnie Andrews and wife Martha of Marshfield, Mo.; several nieces and nephews;. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale with Pastor Guy Durkee officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Friendship Cemetery.
