Mayme Ford McCrary Morris

Mayme Ford McCrary Morris, of Lonoke, Ark., died April 19, 2015, with her family by her side. Mayme was born Jan. 20, 1918 in Lonoke, to Lemuel and Mayme McCrary. She was the first baby to be baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Lonoke were she remained an active member until her passing. Mayme attended Lonoke Public School, where she played basketball and graduated at the top of her class. She then attended The University of Arkansas, graduating with honors and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduation, she attended New York University on scholarship to work on her Masters in Business Administration while she worked at Lord & Taylor. She left NYU after one semester to come home and marry her high school sweetheart. She then dedicated her life to being the best wife, mother, grandmother and community leader she could be; serving in the PTA, Book Club, Coffee Club, Women of the Church and Historical Society. Mayme volunteered on many community projects including acquiring a city swimming pool, teaching reading and registering the Lonoke Train Station as a historical site. Mayme was an avid traveler, having visited more than 20 countries around the world. Mrs. Morris is survived by her daughter, Linda Henderson; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-grea- grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry and her children, James Donald, William Henry, Jr. and Patricia Ann Dickinson. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Lonoke. Donations may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Lonoke. Rosewood Cremation in charge of arrangements.
