William Asa Spurlock

William Asa Spurlock was born on Nov. 12, 1943, in the Arkansas State Forestry district headquarter house in Hardy, Ark. He died in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 9, 2015. William was named for both his grandfathers and his middle name from his father. William loved God and served for 19 years as an Elder of the Bentonville Church of Christ. He also served as a minister of Member Care for the Bentonville Church of Christ since 2006. William loved people, but first and foremost was his wife Barbara. He and Barbara were first introduced in May of 1970 and were married on Oct. 17, 1970 in Salina, Kan. Barbara served alongside William as the two served others in the church and the community. William enjoyed fishing, golfing, Razorback Football and Basketball, and hummingbirds. William graduated from Hardy High School in 1961 and then graduated from Arkansas State College (now University) in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. William's first position was with the John A. Cooper Company (now Cooper Communities) and moved to Bentonville from the Hardy area in 1967 when the corporate headquarters moved to Bella Vista. William served as Assistant Treasurer during his time there. William also worked for seven years for Phillips Food Centers/Food 4 Less as Senior Vice President/Finance. William took a break from accounting in 1983, and he and Barbara bought the Razorback Roller Rink in Rogers where he served as manager/owner, being known as "Bill" to those that skated. Upon selling the rink in 1989, William became the Comptroller of the City of Bentonville, working there until 1993 when he was hired as the Director of Finance for the Bentonville Public Schools where he worked until he retired at the end of 2005. William worked part-time for the Bentonville Church of Christ as the Minister of Member Care. William is preceded in death by his father and mother, Asa and Eva "Nicks" Spurlock; his brother Keith died in 2000. William is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Beth Ann and Jon Pesnell of Bentonville, Ark.; his son and daughter-in-law, Scot Alan and Diana Spurlock of Bentonville; and four grandsons: Peyton Pesnell, Sam Norman, Landon Norman, and Eli Snoxhill. Also, he is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and C. W. Ramsey of Weiner, Ark.; as well as a sister-in-law, Shirley Spurlock of Springfield, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Allen Sandlin Scholarship Fund, Bentonville Church of Christ, 904 N. Walton Blvd, Bentonville, AR 72712. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the Bentonville Church of Christ. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Bentonville Church of Christ with Minister Tim Rine and Minister Walton Hook officiating.
