Margaret Ellen Berg, née McHenry, died suddenly in her Camden home last week. Born in Norphlet in 1939, Margaret moved with her family to California when she was 11, and she graduated from Long Beach High School in 1957 before returning to Arkansas for college. One of the overriding themes of her life was education, and though she attended multiple universities, she was awarded her BA in Spanish with a minor in music at the University of Arkansas in 1962 and went on to earn a master's degree in elementary education in 1971 at Fayetteville as well. During her child-rearing years, she and her husband traveled widely to teach school in Venezuela, Canada, Mexico, Alaska and California. Back in the Land of Opportunity, she taught high school in Lonoke, Gentry, Russellville, and Camden, plus college classes at the University of Arkansas and for 15 years at Southern Arkansas University in Camden – for a total of 53 years in the profession, teaching elementary, Spanish, music and writing. For the last 25 years of her life, she lived and worked in Camden, where aside from her teaching she played the piano and keyboard for several local churches, provided simultaneous translation services for the Hispanic community and published award-winning poetry. Margaret was an avid quilter and proud member of the Ouachita Quilters Guild. She was a longtime member of Victory Church, the Lions Club and the Thursday Musicale. She is survived by two sons, Paul Collar and Karl Kahler, five grandchildren and one sister, as well as her beloved cats Rachel and Benjamin. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th, at 11 a.m. at Victory Church in Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local SPCA.
