Martha Betty Vick Atkinson of Star City passed away Sunday at Cornerstone Hospital in Little Rock. She was born January 5, 1925 in Star City to the late Earl Wayne Vick, Sr. and Myrtis Adams Vick. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Star City, where she was a member of the Women's Circle and Will Emma Sunday School Class. She was the Salutatorian of her High School Graduating Class. She was a program assistant for the ASCS Office in Star City for 31 years. After retiring, she was one of the volunteers, beginning in May 1990 who undertook the project of raising funds to build a Clock Tower in the middle of the Town Square in Star City for the restored clock that was saved when the old Court House was demolished in 1962. Dedication for this project was April 18, 1992. She, also, was one of the organizers of the Lincoln County Beautification Committee with the purpose of maintaining the Town Square. This Committee raised funds for construction of a gazebo on the Town Square, flanking the Clock Tower. The Committee decorates the square at Halloween and Christmas. On January 14, 1999 she was given the honor of being named Star City Chamber of Commerce 1998 Woman of the Year. In 1998, she and Cecil were recognized by First United Methodist Church for the work they did on planning, work and construction of the Family Life Center. She was a member of the Star City Book Club, she started the Spring Fling and was instrumental in starting and completing the Historical Murals that are around Star City. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Cecil Ray Atkinson and brother, Earl Wayne Vick Jr. Survivors include son, Dr. Robbie R. Atkinson of Pine Bluff; 3 daughters, Kathy Sue (Dr. Jim Jr.) Bryan of Morrilton, Martha Jill (Sonny) Lassiter of England and Candace June (Dr. Neil E. Crow Jr.) Crow of Ft. Smith; sister, Sue Dell Black of Pine Bluff; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Star City with Bro. Brad Elrod officiating. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Griffin Funeral Service. There will be a private graveside. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life or First United Methodist Church in Star City.
