Donald Gene Monk, aged 81, of North Little Rock, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Don was born in Little Rock on February 13, 1934 to Pledger and Louise Monk. Don was a proud graduate of North Little Rock High School in the Class of 1952. He was a member of Sylvan Hills Methodist Church. He played football at North Little Rock High and at the University of Arkansas before serving in the Marines from 1953-1955. Don retired in 1975 from the North Little Rock Police Department as Assistant Chief. He also retired from the Arkansas State Livestock and Poultry Commission. Don was preceded in death after 40 years of marriage by his first wife, Mary Thomas Monk, his parents, and brother, Pledger E. Monk Jr. Don is survived by his wife of 19 years, Loretta Ruple Monk; his daughter and son-in-law, Pamm and Scott Treece of Alma; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Carol Monk of North Little Rock; grandchildren, Tyler and Lindsey Treece of Edmond, Oklahoma; Katie Monk of North Little Rock, Maggie and PJ Murders of Bentonville; sister, Joan Vidrine of Jackson, Tennessee; stepchildren, Ronnie Ruple of Sherwood; Jan Heslep of Beebe; Eddie Ruple of Little Rock and Amanda Bowers of Valrico, Florida; great-grandchildren Jameson Treece and Millicent Murders and many relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Tyler Treece, PJ Murders, Andy Anderson, Danny Murdaugh, Ronnie Ruple, Eddie Ruple, Jeff Heslep and Justin Heslep. Honorary pallbearers will be retired members of the North Little Rock Police Department. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church, 9921 Hwy 107, Sherwood, Arkansas 72120. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith-North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main Street, North Little Rock, Arkansas 72114. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
