Gracie Arretis Hickmon Scantlin

Gracie Arretis Hickmon Scantlin, age 87, of Searcy, went to be with her Savior Saturday, April 9, 2016. She was born Oct. 23, 1928 at Bradford, daughter of Hinkle and Arretis VanWinkle Hickmon. Gracie was a member of West Side Church of Christ and loved her family, her church family, her flowers, the birds and doing for others. She is survived by two brothers, Ray Hickmon of Bradford, Andy Hickmon of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Ruth Rhew of Bradford; sister-in-law, Neda Hickmon, whom she thought of as a sister; sister-in-law, Ruth Skinner; brother-in-law, Dale Scantlin; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Missy. Gracie is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Paul Scantlin; her parents; five brothers: John, Carl, Bill, Clinton and Cleve; two sisters, Lois Alexander Goad and Irene Hickmon. Though Gracie never had children of her own, she was many "persons" to our family. To Ray, who was only 16 years old when their dad passed and the oldest left at home, she was his little strong-willed sister-they were close to the end. To Ruth, she was also the strong-willed sister and took care of her-they were also close to the end. To Andy, she was like a mother, but spoiled him like a grandmother; to the nieces and nephews, she was a second mother to some of we older ones, a grandmother to some of we younger ones. Whether sister, aunt, mother, second mother or grandmother, we all loved her very much and we will miss her so very much!!! Visitation is Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Bald Knob. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Smith Cemetery.
