Dr. James J. Van Patten, 90, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in Dr. James J. Van Patten, 90, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his Bachelor's degree in Syracuse, New York and in 1961 earned his PhD in Education at University of Texas - Austin. He married Major Anita Cox in September, 1961. He was a Purple Heart veteran in World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the author of many education books, some of which are still in use. He was the originator of the Journal of Thought, an educational philosophy journal, and served as its editor for many years. He taught for about 35 years at the University of Arkansas, 10 years at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, and for two years at Cali in Colombia, South America as an aide for international development. He was a member of the Christian Science Church in Fayetteville for many years. He loved his work and his students. He is survived by his wife, Anita, his brother, Robert Van Patten, his niece, Alison Verbeck, and two nephews, Jeffrey and David Van Patten. Graveside service at Fairview Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, April 26 at 3 p.m. by Nelson Berna Funeral Home. Flowers made be delivered to funeral home.
