John Penn "Penny" Scott, of Hot Springs, 90, soared to heaven on April 23, 2016 with a big smile and eyes filled with awe. Penny was born in Stephens, Arkansas on December 19, 1925 to Maggie and Josh Scott as the youngest of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings and grandson Winston Penn Wardlaw. Penny is survived by his wife of 65 years, Clayta Jane Carver Scott, his sons Michael Penn Scott (Zada) and Dr. Stephen Allen Scott (Mary Jo), his daughter Mary Frances (Susie) Scott Wardlaw (David), granddaughter Sarah Anna-Frances Scott Kathmann (Paul), grandsons Scott David Wardlaw, Robert Wilson Wardlaw, John Clay Scott and Michael Collins Scott, great-grandson Penn Joseph Kathmann, and sister Libba Christie. He graduated from Waldo High School in 1943 and upon graduation joined the Army Air Corps. Penny served as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber as part of the 301st Bomb Group in Foggia, Italy flying twenty combat missions. At the end of the war he attended Magnolia A&M (Southern Arkansas State University) and Henderson State Teachers College (Henderson State University) where Penny received his degree. He played both football and basketball in college and was the co-captain of the football team his senior year. In 1950 Penny married Clayta and they moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where he worked in the oil industry. Their children were born in Hobbs, and the family subsequently moved to Crossett in 1956 where Penny joined his brother Earl at Scott's LP Gas Company which later became Scott's Gas and Oil, Inc. Upon retirement Clayta and Penny moved to Hot Springs where they are members of First United Methodist Church. Their years in Crossett and Hot Springs have been filled with great memories and friendships. The family would like to express their gratitude to a loving group of caregivers: Lyn Bat-Abba, Yvette Jones, Bre McClintic, Denise Millard, Marty Millard, Holly Millard, Rose Poag, Cyndi Ramthun, Logan Stone, Sara Stone and Sheila Womack. Thanks also to the caring staff of Arkansas Hospice. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28 at Mt. Holly Cemetery, Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Penny may be made to the Winston Penn Wardlaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, Catholic High School Foundation, 6300 Father Tribou Street, Little Rock, Ark. 72205.
